Creature Features: Animal Welfare on Screen is a blog dedicated to exploring exactly what it says in its title, representations of animal welfare in film, television, and other visual media. Its primary aim is to encourage debate into depictions of vegetarianism and veganism in popular culture. While issues such as cruelty, specisim, environmentalism, identity, culture and global inequality are inextricably connected to humanity’s processes of industrialism, corporatocracy, production and consumption, there is, sadly, still a gulf of serious consideration into representations of our exploitation of our fellow creatures in film and similar media. This blog is, in some small way, an attempt to remedy this fact. Although the writing featured here is predominantly focused upon on-screen representations of these issues, it is also concerned with the shocking disregard for the life and dignity of animals when they are utlised within the production of our real-world media. It will, therefore, also hope to highlight the off-screen failure and/or absense of legislilation and regulation that stands up for and protects their limited rights.
I’ll be adding to it when possible – thanks for stopping by!
